The Material: An Extraterrestrial Mystery

This pendant features genuine Libyan Desert Glass, a rare impactite found only in the Great Sand Sea of the eastern Sahara. Formed approximately 28.5 million years ago, this translucent gold glass is the result of a massive meteoric eventeither a direct impact or a high-altitude airburstthat flash-melted the desert sand at temperatures exceeding $1,600C$.

Collectors Guide: Patterns & Inclusions

As a natural glass shaped by the elements over millions of years, each specimen tells a story of its violent birth and desert life:

  • The "Champagne" Clarity: High-purity specimens with a soft, translucent yellow glow.
  • Milky Inclusions: Clouds of tiny bubbles or Cristobalite (white spherules) that mark the extreme cooling process of the molten silica.
  • Cosmic Schlieren: Wispy, internal flow lines (Schlieren) that show how the glass was twisted while in a liquid state.
  • Dark Streaks: Occasionally, rare specimens contain dark "cosmic dust" streaksremnants of the meteorite itself trapped forever in the glass.
